You ever get hit by the cleaning bug? I sure did this year—and when I say I touched every inch of my house, I mean every single inch.
From mid-summer through October, I worked my way through one project at a time. I washed walls, scrubbed light switches and outlet covers, touched up paint (okay, some rooms got a full repaint because the touch-ups didn’t blend—been there?), washed curtains, cleaned cabinets inside and out, and even swapped out all the toilet seats. We got new carpet too—you can see it in the video below—and it completely transformed the space.
But it didn’t stop there. We tackled long-neglected outdoor projects like clearing downspouts, sealing around a few windows, and refreshing our landscaping with new mulch and plants in bare spots that hadn’t seen green in years. After 18 years in this house, I just felt the need to refresh.
Now, we’re not planning to move (unless something extra special hits the market 😉), but all this work got me thinking—if you are considering selling in 2026, now is the perfect time to start preparing.
Why Start Now?
While most people wait until January to set goals, proactive sellers can gain a huge advantage by getting started during this quieter time of year. Fall and early winter are ideal for knocking out indoor projects before the holiday rush and unpredictable weather hit.
Plus, starting early means you can spread out the work—just like I did. It’s amazing what you can get done when you give yourself both time and a deadline. My goal was October 31st, and I finished two days early! That kind of satisfaction is unbeatable—and it keeps your motivation going strong.
Practical Tips for Selling Your Home in 2026
If you’re thinking about listing your home next year, here are some tips for selling your home that can make the process smoother and more rewarding:
Declutter in stages. Take it one room at a time—start with closets and storage areas you rarely use. Donate, toss, or box up items you won’t need before the move.
Deep clean gradually. Wash walls, baseboards, and window frames. Little details make a big difference when it’s time to show your home.
Handle repairs early. Fix minor things now—leaky faucets, loose doorknobs, cracked caulk—before they pile up and feel overwhelming later.
Refresh your curb appeal. Even if the grass isn’t green this time of year, tidy up beds, trim bushes, and plan spring planting spots. Need some ideas? Check out my blog on curb appeal tips that wow buyers.
Plan your upgrades strategically. Carpet, paint, and lighting updates give major impact without breaking the bank.
Stay organized with a plan. My pre-listing checklist walks you through what to tackle—and when—to make the process feel more manageable.
