Carolina Communities: Lake Hartwell Wildlife Safari

As a way to ensure we make time for each other outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas, our family has a quarterly family day.  We range in age from Toddler to Oma and every age group in between, so we always try to find something to do in our Carolina Communities that will be fun for everyone.  This outing, we decided to visit the animals at the Lake Hartwell Wildlife Safari in Hartwell, Georgia.  Don’t let the Georgia part scare you!  It’s a little more than an hours drive from Greenville, so less than that from most other places in the Western Upstate.

According to their website, Hartwell Lake Wildlife Safari is a place where you can “enjoy the animals in a natural setting as you drive through our Safari Adventure. Animals WILL come directly to your vehicle for photo opportunities! Drive through as much as you like for one admission price and then enjoy our Safari Walkabout, Tortoise Lane and our Budgie Experiences afterwards.

Some of the animals you will see include American Bison, Ostrich, Camels, Water Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebu, Parakeets, Tortoises and much more!”

We rented an open-air bus for $30, in addition to admission, so we could all ride and enjoy the adventure together.  That was a good call!  We each purchased a bag or two of feed and they were ready to eat.  Our bus driver told us morning is the best time to go through, because, well, they’re hungry.  Aren’t you first thing in the morning?! LOL.  But, beware, the ostriches are not shy!

It’s definitely worth a half day of quality family time!  Take a look at all of our pictures below.
