Carolina Communities: Lyman, SC – A Place to Call Home

By in Carolina Communities with 0 Comments

According to Wikipedia,”the town of Lyman originally grew around a general store owned by Augustus Belton Groce, which opened in the mid-1870s.  This led to the community becoming known as Groce’s Stop.  In 1923, the Groce family sold over 700 acres to Pacific Mills; by the following year the Lyman Printing and Finishing Mill had been constructed, and by 1927, Pacific Mills had built 375 homes as housing for their employees.  The town was then renamed in memory of Arthur T. Lyman, a former president of the mill.  Lyman prospered for years as a textile town, but by 2005, the last mill was closed.”

Lyman is a small town of just over 3,200 people, according to the 2010 census, and offers a small-town feel that many of you are happy to call home.  In case you haven’t decided if this is the small town for you, here are a few reasons that may seal the deal.

LYMAN EVENT CENTER at PACIFIC PLACE

The Lyman Event Center is the local event venue.  It is not only available for rent for weddings, family reunions, corporate dinners, or whatever event you may be having, but it is also home to a number of community events.  Events include: Friday Night Bingo, Breakfast with Santa, Family Ornament Painting, Daddy Daughter Dances, Holiday Fairs, and so much more!  Ask yourself:  if you lived in a big city, would you even consider going to congested events like this?

RAIL TRAIL

In 2017, the town of Lyman opened the Rail Trail on the right-of-way of the Old Springs/Pacific mill railroad tracks.  Whether you’re out for some exercise, a ride on your bike, taking your dog for a walk, or just making your way to Lyman’s commercial center, the Rail Trail is the place to be.  And, it’s only the beginning.  The Town of Lyman has plans to continue expansion of the trail in the coming years.  I bet you won’t have to worry about sharing this place with thousands of other locals and tourists, like you do in other, much larger Upstate parks.

THE PARK OF LYMAN

Kids of Lyman UNITE!  LOL, well, meet up at the playground anyway 🙂  This very cool playground, located in The Park of Lyman, sits at the town center waiting on your kids to get all their energy out so they will fall right asleep at night.  From the swings to the miniature rock wall and multiple slides, this is a great place to gather for the kids to play and the adults to chat.

LYMAN LAKE

If it’s water you seek, it’s water you’ll find at Lyman Lake.  This is a 350 acre reservoir lake that can be used for recreation and I promise it won’t be as crowded as Hartwell and Keowee!  You can enjoy fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating (up to a 90hp outboard engine), and water skiing.  Plus, there are many homes that have access to the water.  We just so happen to have one available for sale.  Check it out:  545 SHADOW LANE!

While your first thought when you see a house for sale in Lyman, SC may be, “wow, I do not want to live in a town that small,” I encourage you to rethink that.  When you own a home in Lyman, you may just find the place you didn’t know you were looking for all along!

If you live in Greenville or Spartanburg, you certainly can get these amenities, but instead of interacting with the community, you’re absorbed in your own little world.  When you call a place like Lyman, SC home, you have all the same amenities with the added bonus of fewer crowds at your favorite walking spot and knowing you are a part of something bigger.  That something bigger is “small town charm, big city services…” [1]
