Ok, all the shelves are out, the doors are off, and everything is cleaned! I used Krud Kutter to degrease the shelves, doors, and cabinet shells. Side note, this stuff will clean ANYTHING!! It’s a little price, but it is worth it. Back to the cabinets…Step 2 for today was filling the holes. We are putting new hinges on the doors, so I filled all the holes in the shells and the doors with wood filler because the new hinge holes do not line up with the old ones. And we’re being professional here, so it has to be done 🙂 Step 3, SANDING!! Take a look, then we’ll talk about it:
I’m really happy with the progress we made. It would have been much longer had my hubby not jumped in to help! I think seeing the progress and discussing the finished project has made him a little excited too.
So here are the details:
WHAT DID WE USE: Per my research, we used 100 grit sand paper. I just ordered a 25 pack of 9×11 sheets on amazon and cut them to size to fit my hand sander. It’s much cheaper than buying the ones that actually fit it. We’re on a budget, after all, LOL!
WHAT DID WE LEARN:
- We learned that the exposed sides of the cabinets are not actually wood. They are more of a veneer finish and they don’t sand well. I thought the paint was just not coming off, so I switched to a 60 grit sand paper and that was a bad idea. I took off the entire finish. So, we just scuffed up the other one and will do the same for the remaining sides, and see how it looks. If it’s bad, we have a backup plan. I’ll share that if we need it.
- Clean up when you’re finished!! We only completed one section and we need our kitchen, so we cleaned up for functionality, but even if you aren’t using your kitchen during your rehab, my recommendation is to clean up at the end of each work day. Get rid of the dust on your countertops, floors, inside cabinets, etc. It will make it so much more manageable as you move forward.
- The hand sanders and shop vac will be your friends!
CAST OF CHARACTERS:
UP NEXT: We’ll finish sanding, then caulk between the cabinet shells and the wall, then onto primer. Keep an eye out for that episode, because we don’t use just any primer or brushes. It’s special.
